Dark Circles Under the Eyes

dark circle under eyes?
( 3 Jun 2009)

Dark Circles under the eyes are a common problem and one that can make us look old, unhealthy, and exhausted. There are a wide variety of medications available today for dark circles, some of which are very effective. Natural remedies may not be as effective as the best eye creams, but they are certainly a lot less expensive and very easily available.

Dark circles may be caused due to a variety of factors, some that we can control and others we cannot. The common causes would include:
  • Heredity is the single largest cause for dark circles, and there is not much that you can do to change this.
  • Dark circles may also be caused due to allergies, asthma, and eczema. In such situations avoiding exposure to known allergens is the best way to reduce your symptoms.
  • Certain medications may cause a darkening of circles due to the effects of dilation of blood vessels and an increased flow of blood through the skin.
  • Nutritional deficiencies or anemia can often contribute to the condition. Iron deficiencies are the most common. Switching to a more wholesome diet may offer some succor in such situations. In other cases it would be advisable to consult a dietician for a personalized diet plan or supplements if necessary.
  • If there is skin paleness underlying veins may be more visible, contributing to the problem. For this reason dark circles may appear during pregnancy or menstruation, as a result of an iron deficiency.
  • Sleep deprivation and exhaustion work in the same manner as iron deficiency to pale the skin, making dark circles more prominent.
  • Aging is another major factor that is not controllable. There is a loss of collagen in the skin and a thinning of the skin making it increasingly translucent, therefore darkening circles.
  • Bad circulation or dehydration are some of the other causes, both which can be easily remedied.
While some of the causes have obvious solutions, for example a lack of sleep can be remedied with adequate rest, and a dietary deficiency with supplements, other causes may not be so obvious or the solutions may not be. In some cases the dark circles may be symptomatic of some separate disease. If the dark circles are caused by a lack of sleep, this may either bay the problem that needs to be remedied or there may be an underlying cause for the lack of sleep. Getting to the root of the problem is essential for effective treatment.
