Tuberculosis (also known as "TB") is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Tuberculosis affects the respiratory system, and is spread by coughing and sneezing, and is thereby contagious. Enlargement of the lymph node and cough are the initial symptoms.
Sometimes, fever, weight loss, fatigue and loss of appetite are also seen. It can be prevented by avoiding contact with T.B patients, by using medications as a preventive measure and by maintaining good lifestyle. The short answer is yes, tuberculosis is classed as an infectious disease which is typically spread through respiratory droplets. However, in naturopathic medicine, it is the "terrain" , not necessarily the "bug" which determines whether or not the disease progresses. So, supporting your immune system with good food, exercise and natural therapies will go a long way toward prevention. You may check the CDC and WHO websites for additional information on tuberculosis. http://www.countrydoc.com Dr. Karen Benton, Naturopathic Physician
