Asthma is chronic respiratory condition that causes and inflammation and narrowing of the airways. The inflamed and sensitive airways tend to react very strongly to certain irritants that are inhaled causing an asthma attack or the symptoms we are familiar with. Wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness of the chest, and coughing are the common symptoms.
Coughing also occurs frequently at night or after waking up.
When the airways react to irritants the muscles tighten, narrowing the airways. The inflammation can further narrow the airways and mucus can also add to the problem.
The symptoms may be mild and resolve naturally, but in some instances may worsen and these intense symptoms are an asthma attack. It’s important to pay attention to the symptoms and treat them promptly to prevent a flare up. Very severe attacks may require emergency medical attention and can even lead to death.
Asthma may not be curable, but appropriate treatment and knowledge about the symptoms can help you overcome and live a normal life despite the condition. There are a number of natural therapies or treatments that can improve your condition, as well as natural remedies and lifestyle changes.
- If you suffer from allergic asthma or are aware of certain irritants that trigger an attack, make sure you avoid any exposure to them. Dust, smoke, mold, and food additives are some of the most common allergens.
- Physical fitness does help improve your health, but yoga is possibly the best discipline for an asthmatic, as it will not just keep you fit and active, but also improve your condition. Asthma attacks are very often triggered by stress, and yoga is the most effective natural method of stress reduction. In addition the breathing exercises and physical practices of yoga will strengthen and expand the lungs.
- Consult a dietician for a personalized diet plan. Restriction of dairy products and sugar has been found to help in some cases of childhood asthma.
- Aromatherapy can offer great relief for almost all respiratory conditions. Use essential oils like eucalyptus and myrrh for steam inhalations or chest rubs and warm soaks. They will not only help you relax, but inhalation can help clear the airways, while massages and soaks can release stress in the muscles and reduce inflammation.
- Acupuncture may also help deal with asthma according to some patients and practitioners.
- There are also many herbal remedies that are believed to help treat asthma, but I would not recommend any as many herbs can cause reactions with other medications.
