Many of us are under the impression that surgery and medical treatments are necessary to treat kidney stones. This however couldn’t be further from the truth. While failing to visit your doctor for something as serious as a kidney stone would amount to negligence, you would do well to try out some natural treatments as well.


Make sure however that you keep your doctor in the loop. There are a variety of foods and juices that can help dissolve kidney stones naturally, eliminating the need for surgery or other expensive treatments. An accurate diagnosis from your doctor is essential however, as there are different types of kidney stones, and natural remedies may not be equally effective for all.




Calcium phosphate stones are probably the most common and these can be easily dissolved with natural remedies. Apart from these there are also calcium oxalate stones, magnesium ammonium phosphate or struvite stones, uric acid stones, and cystine stones. Not all of these can be treated naturally alone, but thankfully these types are not as common. While natural remedies may not be able to solve the problem completely in all types of stones, they can certainly help facilitate healing.

Here are some natural remedies and foods that are recommended for patients suffering from kidney stones.
  • Fluid intake is vital, so make it a point to increase your intake of water. Fruit juices are also healthy, but make it a point to avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks. In addition, it would be wise to limit your water intake to distilled water, as it is not just pure, but also mineral free. Water is the perfect remedy to flush out those kidney stones, as such pure water will not even add to the mineral deposits.
  • Citric fruits would be a healthy addition to your diet, as they have been found to be effective in helping to dissolve kidney stones in many cases; Lemons are the most easily available and common of these fruits. They can be added to your distilled water or eaten raw.
  • Exercise may seem to be one of those fads touted for every ailment, but it does actually work. Exercise does a lot more than strengthen those biceps or triceps. It helps flush out toxins, plaque and yes, kidney stones.
  • Cranberry juice is one of the most effective cures for a variety of ailments that afflict the urinary tract. It can fight of infections and its acidic nature can also facilitate the dissolving of some types of kidney stones.
  • Citrates and fiber are also essential to reduce uric acid or calcium salts build ups. Juices of fruits and veggies like grapes, carrots and oranges are recommended as well as the consumption of a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables as a source of water soluble fiber.
