Hepatitis B is a life threatening viral infection that afflicts the liver. It is caused by the dreaded hepatitis B virus, and is now a global problem. It is the most serious of all types of viral hepatitis as it can cause chronic liver disease and poses a high risk of mortality due to complications like liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.
A vaccine with an effectiveness of 95% has been available since 1982, and it can prevent both infection and the chronic consequences.
The virus can cause acute illness, displaying symptoms of jaundice – yellowing skin, dark urine, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. These symptoms may last several weeks, and the person may even take several months, or a year to fully recover.
What’s more worrying however, is the fact that it can cause a chronic liver infection. This can later escalate to liver cirrhosis or cancer.
An acute hepatitis B infection in most cases does not require treatment as most adults will overcome the infection naturally. This would be a self-limiting infection. In the case of immunocompromised patients or if the infection takes an aggressive course antiviral treatments would be required. In the case of a chronic infection treatment would again be required because of the danger of cirrhosis or cancer.
Since you haven’t specified whether the afflicted person suffers from acute or chronic hepatitis B it may not be possible to give you a home remedy. Moreover, it’s important that you consider the seriousness of this infection and seek medical treatment and diagnosis, rather than rely solely on home remedies. While an acute infection requires little medical intervention and can be treated with natural remedies and care, a chronic infection is a lot more serious and you should only rely on natural home remedies as a supplement to conventional treatment. They can facilitate healing and minimize the risks posed by some medications. Whatever you decide make sure you consult with your health care provider.
Remedies: In the case of an acute infection, the treatment should focus on providing comfort and maintaining an adequate nutritional balance. The treatment is in fact identical to jaundice treatment, and it also aims to replenish fluid loss through vomiting or diarrhea.
Irrespective of the nature of your infection there are certain lifestyle changes and measures that need to be taken to protect against complications:
- Alcohol consumption should be strictly avoided as it only hastens the progression of liver disease.
- Certain medications can cause liver damage and further weaken your liver, so always make it a point to consult with your doctor before taking any medication, including over the counter drugs.
- A healthy diet is essential, so make sure that your diet is loaded with fruits and vegetables. Whole grains and lean protein are also recommended. Such a diet will also strengthen the immune system. Smaller meals through the day will also help relieve nausea, while foods like soups, baked potato, and broths will be easier to digest. Try and get a specialized diet from a dietician.
- Exercise and sleep are essential for your health. Light exercise will help strengthen your system and rest is also necessary to rejuvenate.
