Swollen gums or gingivitis belongs to the category of periodontal disease. This includes any disease or condition that afflicts the gums or the bony, soft tissues around the tooth. Periodontal disease is in fact one of the most common infections in the United States.
The condition can contribute to tooth loss. The risk of periodontal disease increases as you age. Swollen gums or inflammation of the gums, are actually the first stage of the disease.
This condition is a lot more serious than a mild swelling. The formation of plaque is the beginning if the disease, as it covers the tooth and gradually settles at the base, causing the gums to swell. If it is not controlled immediately, gaps form between the gum and teeth, providing an ideal environment for even more plaque to accumulate. With an increased build up there will be more pain, formation of pus, abscesses and tooth loss. Most worryingly, it increases the danger of heart disease, as the infection can spread to the heart through your blood stream resulting in endocarditis, a life threatening condition of inflamed lining of the heart.
Here are some home remedies that can help you treat the problem of swollen gums, and help maintain the health of your teeth and gums.
- Baking soda can make for a very effective remedy. Make a baking soda solution, by mixing it with some water, and apply it gently with your fingers to the gum line or base of your teeth. Then brush your teeth. You can even brush your teeth once or twice a week with baking soda. This is not just cosmetic. Apart from cleaning and polishing the teeth it helps neutralize acidic bacterial wastes, and it also controls bad breath.
- Healthy blood circulation to the gums can help, so massage your gum gently, by gripping it and rubbing gently with the thumb and index finger.
- Vitamin C and D may not help cure the condition, but they will help check the bleeding if any and improve the health of your gums.
- Most of us brush our teeth daily, but neglect to look after out tongue. Bacteria and toxins can build up on the tongue as well, contributing to your problem. You can simply scrape your tongue with your toothbrush to keep it clean.
- Aloe vera is a useful herb that can be of some use to you. It has healing properties, and can also help reduce plaque build up in your mouth.
