Toothaches are quite a common problem, and one that can be easily avoided with good dental care and hygiene. Most of us unfortunately neglect our dental health until plagued with severe toothaches, cavities, and a host of other problems. When dealing with a toothache, keep in mind that home remedies will only offer relief in most situations, but not actually solve your problem.

Toothaches can have a variety of causes like tooth decay, a cavity, bacteria, or an abscess, to name a few. An accurate diagnosis is therefore essential for any effective treatment to commence. A dentist will be able to make an accurate diagnosis and recommend the appropriate action plan.

Until then there are plenty of natural remedies that can offer relief from the excruciating pain of a toothache.

Toothaches may cause a sharp and shooting pain from certain jaw movement or when eating, and it could also be a dull, throbbing, and persistent pain. If you do not get the appropriate treatment it may become necessary to extract the tooth. In case of an infection, it can even spread to the gums or neighboring teeth.

Here are some tips and remedies to help you care for your teeth and get relief from the toothache.
  • Tooth decay, being the leading cause of toothaches, should be controlled. A faulty diet is the main cause, and this would be one that includes foods like candies, pastries, artificially sweetened drinks, and refined sugar. Avoid such foods as far as possible.
  • Garlic has come to be regarded as a potent remedy for toothaches. Chew a garlic clove every morning, and you can also position a garlic clove against the affected tooth.
  • Onions may be bad for your breath, but they’re great for your teeth. Chewing on a raw onion for just a few minutes daily can eliminate the risk of most tooth or gum infections. Onion’s antibacterial properties make it such a potent remedy.
  • Lime and wheatgrass are two other effective remedies. You can either cheew on wheatgrass or even consume it’s juice.
  • Cloves are another popular cure, among herbalists, for toothaches. Cloves are in fact quite effective as pain relievers, and thanks to their antiseptic properties, they also minimize the risk of infection. Clove oil works just as well as cloves.

Even if a home remedy seems to have solved your problem, make it a point to visit a dentist for a checkup to rule out the possibility of an infection.
