Acid reflux and heartburn are often experienced together as they are both caused by excess stomach acid production. Heartburn is often a symptom of acid reflux- in which the stomach acids actually back up or reflux into the esophagus. Both these conditions can cause great discomfort and can even be quite painful but they can be easily managed through a few lifestyle and dietary changes.

It is important to understand what causes this condition so that you can also understand the importance of the simple lifestyle changes that are necessary to treat these conditions. The lower end of the esophagus has a band of muscle tissue that closes and opens the lower end of the esophagus. This ensures the separation of the stomach from the food pipe.

When this muscle tissue weakens, it is unable to close properly and so the acids produced by the stomach to digest food, backs up. Poor diet habits especially if followed for an extensive period, drugs and other nervous system factors can cause the weakening of this muscle tissue and cause Acid Reflux.

There are several simple acid reflux heartburn remedies that may help to alleviate your discomfort. You can chew on a handful of Fennel Seeds after your meals. And have a Ginger Root capsule everyday. Alternatively, you can have a cup of Anise and Lavender Tea daily to control this condition. It is best if you get medical advice as your doctor will be able to study your case and suggest natural treatments that are best suited for you.

As mentioned earlier, the main source of your discomfort is the stomach acid. This acid is produced by the body to digest the food you eat. Some foodstuffs require more acid in order for them to be completely digested. It is therefore important that you avoid these foods completely. Foods that are high in fats such as fried foods and junk food should be avoided as fat delays stomach emptying. In addition to this fat requires a greater quantity of acid for its digestion. Do not smoke as this weakens the band of muscle tissue that keeps the stomach contents from backing up. Do not drink milk or consume milk-based products within hours of bedtime. Milk too has been known to increase stomach acidity and is often cited as one of the main causes of colic in babies. Coffee, alcohol, Chocolate and peppermint stimulate gastric acid secretion and so you should restrict your consumption of food products that contain them. Avoid all sweetened and unsweetened carbonated soft drinks.

In addition to these dietary changes and remedies, it would also be advisable to follow a few simple lifestyle changes. Do not sleep directly after your meals as this would promote acid reflux. Go for a short leisurely stroll after your meals as this will aid digestion and prevent both acid reflux and heartburn. Keep your head elevated when you sleep to ensure that the stomach acid does not back up.
