The common cough is generally caused by a viral infection. This infection causes the accumulation of mucous which the body tries to expel by coughing. A cough generally does not last for more than a week and in most cases, a day of two of complete bed-rest will help the body to fight off the infection.

There are also several simple home remedies that you can use to speed up the healing process:

1.    Peel a large piece of fresh ginger and grate it. Add a teaspoon of honey to the ginger and eat the mixture slowly.

Alternatively you can blend the piece of ginger along with the honey and eat the paste slowly. Ginger has warming properties and helps to liquefy mucus that has thickened. In addition to this ginger also has antimicrobial properties and therefore helps to reduce the severity of the infection.

2.    A hot cup of herbal tea can work wonders! Licorice is a powerful expectorant as well as a muscle relaxant. Licorice herbal tea should be sipped while it is still piping hot as this will help to expel phlegm. Licorice also helps to soothe the throat muscles and prevent bronchial spasms. Alternatively, you can use Slippery elm in your herbal tea. This herb will help to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. It is better to consult a medical specialist who is familiar with herbal treatments before you start any herbal treatments.

3.    Eucalyptus oil is extremely effective in treating the common cough. It is generally used ion a steam inhalation to clear out the respiratory passages. It is very soothing and helps to minimize painful bronchial contractions. Heat a large sauce pan of water on medium or high heat and once it comes to the boil turn down the heat. Allow the water to simmer for a few minutes and then take it off the heat. Add five to seven drops of Eucalyptus oil to the saucepan. Place the steaming saucepan in front of you and position your head over it such that you are close enough to inhale the vapor but far enough so that the steam is not scalding hot. Place a towel over your head so that the steam does not escape. Inhale deeply and exhale for at least 10 minutes or until the water is no longer steaming.

In addition to this, your diet is also very important. Have plenty of soups and thick broths. Hot soups help to thin and expel mucus. It is important to get rid of the accumulated mucus as it contains the pathogens responsible for the infection. Do not have fried or spicy food as this will irritate your throat even further. Avoid cold food stuff as this will encourage painful spasms and coughing fits. If your cough lasts for more than a week or two, please visit your doctor.
