Piles is a painful condition of inflammation in the rectal area caused due to varicosity of the surrounding veins. Passing of stools becomes extremely painful and difficult because of pressure on the rectal area during defecation. Piles does not have any local treatment and chronic constipation being the cause, it is necessary to treat constipation first and foremost.
To start with the digestive system needs to be given adequate rest for a few days, and the intestines should be cleansed completely. Dietary modifications are therefore the most important aspect of any treatment plan for piles. For the first five days it would be advisable to adopt an all fruit diet, in which you can have three to four meals a day with fresh juicy fruits like apples, pears, grapes, oranges, peaches, pineapples and melons.
Fluid intake is important, so consume adequate water or unsweetened lemon water.
If the case of piles in question is stubborn or prolonged it would be wise to follow a short fast for at least three to four days, prior to the all fruit diet. While abstaining from solid foods, the patient may consume fresh orange juice with warm water. An enema administered with warm water in the mornings will help cleanse the bowels and give the rectal tissues adequate rest.
After the fruit diet you may start eating other natural foods, but the diet should still be aimed towards soft stools. The diet should be very low in fat, so you can include fresh fruits and vegetables, with the exception of onions, cabbage, dried beans and peas. You can also include dried and cooked cereals and fruit juices. Low fat varieties of skimmed milk, curd and cottage cheese are permissible, but in moderation. An ideal diet would include fruits like apple, pear, musk melon and papaya, as well as green veggies like radish and spinach, porridge and whole meal cereals. Dry fruits like figs and raisins are also recommended. Avoid lentils and pulses, meats, cheese, white sugar, fried foods, flour products, rice, sweets and caffeinated drinks.
Here are some of the most effective remedies that you can use in addition to the diet: - Dry figs soaked overnight make for a great remedy. Clean them in warm water, soak them overnight, and consume them in the morning and drink the water in which they soaked. You can repeat this for the evening, and keep up the practice for a few weeks.
- Radish juice is another effective remedy. Drink quarter cup twice a day and gradually increase it to half a cup.
- Boil and mash a banana in milk and consume the mixture thrice a day.
These natural remedies will help in the evacuation of the bowels and cleansing of the digestive system. They also help to ease the passage of stools. The most important strategy is your diet though, failing which no remedy will have lasting effects.
