Remedies for dark circles under eyes

dark circles under eyes
(30 May 2006)

The appearance of dark circles can really mar the charm of your face. Physical conditions, fatigue, or inappropriate nutrition can be causes of these dark circles and appropriate remedies should be taken as soon as possible to remove them for good. Fortunately, there are a lot of tried and tested home remedies for this problem.

Some of the common causes for dark circles are:
  • Ageing: With age, often the delicate skin under the eyes begins to thin out. The pad which is soft and fatty when we are younger, starts to show the veins underneath. This gives the appearance of dark circles.
  • Genetics: Your facial structure and the body constitution have a major role to play in the formation of dark circles. If you have deep set eyes, there will be an appearance of dark circles even when there are none.
  • Fluid Retention: When there is retention of fluid in the skin under the eyes, it causes the blood vessels to dilate and become dark. Eating fibrous foods can eliminate retention of water in the body.
  • Inadequate sleep: This is the most common cause of dark circles. The pallor that lack of sleep causes, makes the area under the eyes look bluish and gives the appearance of dark circles.
  • Anemia or dehydration: Both can cause the skin under eyes to turn a little blue. This may cause the dark circles to appear unnaturally visible.
 Remedies:
  • Keep yourself as hydrated as you can. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Drink water, fruit juices, and soups to keep your skin glowing and flush out the toxins.
  • Do not ever step out in the sun without wearing sunscreen. If you apply makeup, make sure that you mix some sunscreen with your base make up.
  • Get a good amount of sleep. Inadequacy of sleep is one of the foremost reasons as to why many people develop these dark circles. When your body is not properly rested, the first signs appear on your face.
  • Tone and moisturize skin regularly. Create your own beauty regimen but take care of your skin. Use only products that suit your skin type.
  • Soak chamomile tea bags in warm water and brew a tea. Now soak a wash cloth into this tea and use that to cover your eyes. You can also use peppermint tea instead of chamomile.
  • Cut down on salt in your diet. Sodium causes water retention which dilates the blood vessels under the eyes and gives the appearance of dark circles.

Try these home remedies:
1)      Apply this paste around your eyes: 1 tsp tomato juice + ½ tsp lemon juice + pinch of turmeric powder + 1 tsp flour. Leave on for 10 mins and rinse.
2)      Cover your eyes with cotton pads soaked in cucumber juice for at least 15-20 mins and relax.

Some tips:
Avoid using heavy creams and moisturizers under the eyes.
Use an eye cream containing vitamin E.
Eat lots of green vegetables and carrots.
Sleep well for at least 7-8 hours in the night.
Sitting for too much time in front of the television or computer can worsen your condition.

Often dark circles under eyes are indicative of "allergic shiners."  This means you may be eating foods for which you have some food sensitivities.  The most common food sensitivities are wheat, corn, cow's milk, egg, soy, citrus fruit, nuts, tomatoes, potatoes and chocolate.  You may choose to be tested for food sensitivities from a local health care practitioner, or eliminate one of these foods for 4-6 weeks, and monitor your symptoms.  You may then re-introduce this food, and continue to monitor your results. Other causes for dark circles under eyes may be due to ethnic origin or circulatory weaknesses.
