Freckles are a very common and harmless skin condition. It is simply a result of skin pigmentation. Let us look at what causes these tiny dots to appear on our skin.

Our skin gets its color from a pigment known as melanin. People with lighter skin tones have a low concentration of this pigment within their skin as compared to those with darker skin tones. Prolonged exposure to the sun enhances the production of this pigment. This is simply a defense mechanism adopted by our body, in order to protect itself from the harmful effects of the suns UV rays. This is why freckles are found in areas of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, arms, chest and hands. Thus, suffice it to say that an increase in the production of melanin is what leads to the formation of these tiny dots.

Here are a few home remedies that can help in reducing the appearance of freckles. Lemon juice is considered to be an excellent lightening agent and hence it serves as a great remedy for this problem. Apply a thin layer of freshly squeezed lemon juice onto the affected area and let it air dry for 10-15 minutes. Once the application dries, rinse it off with some cold water. This remedy should be performed regularly till the spots begin to lighten. Warm a teaspoon of honey and apply the warm liquid on the concerned area. Leave the application on for about 15 minutes, after which rinse it off with some lukewarm water. This treatment should be executed twice a day, in order to yield the desired results.

Empty the contents of a vitamin E capsule into a small bowl. Now, apply 3-4 drops of the oil on to the freckled skin at bedtime. As an alternative you could also use castor oil (odorless) instead of vitamin E oil. Take a small to medium sized red onion and slice it into half. Gently rub one half of the vegetable onto the freckles for a few minutes and then wash the area with some chilled water. This remedy should be performed 2-3 times a day, till the spots begin to fade. The application of vegetable or fruit masks, particularly one’s that have been made with red currants, apricot, strawberries and cucumbers, will also help in reducing freckles. Lastly, always make sure to protect your skin from the sun while stepping out.
