Curing Jock Itch

How to get rid of jock itch?
(20 Apr 2010)

Jock itch medically referred to as tinea cruis is a fungal infection of the skin. This condition is brought about by a type of fungus known as Trichophyton rubrum. Jock itch is characterized by an itchy, flaky, reddish, ring-shaped rash that occurs mainly around the anus and groin area.

This condition can also cause the skin to burn, crack and peel. While the rash is found more commonly among men, it can affect women too. Jock itch is contagious and can be easily transferred from one person to another, through direct contact or through the sharing of clothes and towels. The fungus responsible for causing this condition grows in moist and warm parts of the body. Hence, as mentioned earlier, the rash is most commonly seen in the genital area, groin area and the inner thighs. The fungus starts to develop when these areas become too warm and moist or when there is an accumulation of sweat in this region.

Jock itch can be treated with the help of a few simple home remedies. Avoid using tight clothing or undergarments, as this will aggravate the condition even further. Loose fitting garments would be a good choice, as it will permit the skin to breathe, while also preventing sweat from accumulating in the groin area. Apple cider vinegar is a great anti-fungal agent and hence works as a great remedy for treating this condition. Dip a clean cotton ball in a bowl of apple cider vinegar and then apply a generous layer of the liquid onto the affected area. Once the application has dried, after about 10-15 minutes, wash it off with lukewarm water. This remedy needs to be performed 2-3 times a day, for a period of 5-6 days, till the rash disappears completely.

Tea tree oil is also a great anti-fungal agent and can be used as a topical application too. Apply a few drops of the oil onto the affected area, with the help of a clean cotton ball, and then rinse it off after 15-20 minutes. Garlic is also known to possess antifungal properties. Hence increasing the intake of garlic will prove to be beneficial. Stay away from processed, greasy and fried foods till the rash disappears. Furthermore, avoid alcohol, sugar, refined carbohydrates and food products which contain yeasts, as they will simply aggravate the condition even further. If none of these remedies work and the symptoms show no signs of improving, then contact your physician immediately.
