I want to know about solution for heel pain?
(18 Mar 2010)

Scientifically referred to as plantar fasciitis and colloquially called heel spur, heel pain is caused by inflammation of a band of tissue in the heel which is called the plantar fascia. It extends from the heel to the toes. This condition makes walking troublesome and aggravates with time.

As such, timely treatment of heel pain is vital.

It is important to know what causes heel pain. Some of the heel pain causes include arthritis, tendonitis, nerve irritation, fracture, stress and sometimes, the presence of cysts. Other causes include deformities in the structure of the foot and wearing hard or non-supportive footwear.

Heel pain is one of the major ailments that athletes suffer from and is caused by a variety of factors like wearing uncomfortable shoes and running on hard and steep surfaces.

There are various remedies for heel spur pain relief, some of which are listed below:

  • One of the effective remedies to cure heel pain is to stretch the calf muscles and plantar fascia before beginning any intense physical exercise like running and gym exercises involving foot work. You are also advised to stretch your feet and legs three to four times a day after every prolonged span of sitting.
  • Water massage is also an effective treatment for heel pain. In this technique of massage, you are required to soak your feet in cold and hot water alternately till the times pain subsides. Water massage revitalizes the blood vessels of your feet and helps cure heel spur pain.
  • The application of ointments containing capsaicin is an effective treatment for heel pain. Capsaicin is the key ingredient found in pepper. It causes a burning sensation but also provides relief from heel spur pain.
  • It is important to wear shoes that are comfortable. As such, you must wear footwear that support your feet. Wearing high heels is a strict “no-no” as it enhances the distance between your feet and ground and causes heel pain.
  • If you are an athlete or a fitness freak who likes to jog or run, you must ensure that you do not run on hard surfaces and rough terrain. You must jog or run on soft surfaces like those in gardens or parks. This too would help in treatment of heel pain.
  • If you are obese, you exert a lot of pressure on your plantar fascia while walking. As such, you should lose weight so that you do not overstrain your feet. This is not just a treatment for heel pain, but also a good way to prevent heel pain and stay fit.
However, you are advised to consult your orthopedist for expert advice. It is better to first diagnose the cause of heel pain and then cure it.

Considering the amount of stress and activity that we expose our feet to on a daily basis, it is not uncommon for a person to suffer from heel pain. Depending on the severity of the condition, it could have a very debilitating effect on the individual’s daily schedule. Due to the fact that there are so many possible aggravating agents that could induce the pain, the cause of heel pain must first be correctly identified in order to successfully treat the condition. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue that happens to extend from the heel right up to the toe. When suffering from plantar fasciitis, the individual will usually first notice the fascia becoming irritated and then inflamed – which results in the heel pain. Individuals suffering from the condition have reported that the pain is worse in the morning, when they just wake up, and gradually reduces over the course of the day, while the fascia is allowed to stretch. Some other individuals may tend to experience sudden attacks of pain around the heel that could restrict their movement significantly during the course of the day. The most common cause of plantar fasciitis is usually the faulty structure of the foot. Badly designed footwear or shoes that put an exorbitant amount of strain on the foot on hard surfaces are likely to be the primary causes of the condition.

The best treatment options hover around relieving any additional stress on the muscles. Most stretching exercises will help achieve this. Avoid walking without shoes as you tend to punt unnecessary strain on the plantar fasciia. Placing an ice pack or cold compress will help reduce the inflammation as well as burning sensation that are likely to be present. Limit your activities and give your feet and – more precisely – your heel an extended rest. When buying shoes, always pick out shoes that offer good support for the arch and have a slightly raised heel as they help alleviate any additional stress on the plantar fasciia. Obesity is one of the most common conditions to play a part in the development of heal pain as a result of the amount of pressure applied to the fascia when walking or standing for long periods of time. Hence, losing weight is also extremely beneficial. Wearing a night splint will help maintain an extended stretch of the fascia while sleeping. This will significantly help reduce the amount of pain experienced when you wake up in the morning.
