Ovarian Cyst and Fertility

Can a woman with ovarian cyst conceive?
(10 Mar 2010)

An ovarian cyst, as the term suggests, is nothing but a cyst that is formed on the ovaries. The ovaries form a very important part of the female reproductive system, as they are responsible for producing the egg. These structures are about as big as an almond, and they are placed on either side of the uterus.

At times tiny fluid filled sacs or cysts form on the ovaries, these are referred to as ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts are not that uncommon a phenomenon, in-fact, as per recent research, a woman is said to develop at least one ovarian cyst at some point in time. While a large number of cysts are totally harmless or benign, some however can prove to be malignant or harmful.

Cystadenomas, dermoid cysts, functional cysts, endometriomas and polycystic ovaries are the various types of ovarian cysts. The type of treatment that is to be administered will thus differ based on the nature of the cyst. These cysts generally do not display any kind of sign or symptom. They may be detected through a routine physical examination or they may be detected through an ultrasound that may have been conducted for some other reason. However, having said that, the following symptoms could be present: irregular menstrual cycle, lower pelvic or abdominal pain, which may sudden, sharp and severe, an experience of lower pelvic or abdominal fullness or pressure, vomiting and nausea, pain during sexual intercourse and prolonged lower-back pain during the menstrual cycle.

As mentioned earlier, majority of ovarian cysts are harmless or benign, and they generally tend to go away on their own accord, over a period of time. But unfortunately, there are always exceptions. Painful or large cysts could at times cause serious health problems. As these cysts can cause a woman to have irregular menstrual cycles, they can thus affect ovulation, which then in turn makes conception difficult and at times even impossible. Ovarian cysts are known to affect conception in 2 ways: first, the egg that is produced during ovulation cannot be released and second, after fertilization the egg is unable to attach itself to the uterine wall. This is when medical intervention is required. Treatment will be then be administered based upon the nature as well as the severity of the condition. To conclude, if you have been diagnosed with this condition, then it is best that you get your doctors opinion, so the right course of action can be taken.
