Blocked Ear Treatment

What is the best way to unclog an ear?
( 4 Feb 2010)

A blocked ear can be quite an uncomfortable condition. It can cause situations where the person has a lot of difficulty hearing, speaks louder as a result, and seems to be quite uncomfortable. The process of attempting to unclog the ear can also cause a lot of discomfort and pain at times.

Now there are plenty of reasons why that ear could be blocked or clogged in the first place. A cold is one of the commonest reasons why we experience such blocked ears. This is more so in case of a heavy cold where even our nose gets blocked. Another possibility is a higher altitude, especially when descending from a place at a height, such as a hill stations. Similarly, an airplane ride can also leave you with clogged ears. The air pressure when landing can cause immense discomfort and can be hard on your ears. It is not uncommon for ears to remain clogged for even days after one’s flight. There are some things one can do to tackle the problem of a clogged ear.

One of the basic ways in which one can get the ear to open up in less serious situations would be to yawn widely. This act of yawning typically helps the ears to finally pop. You could try a few big yawns before attempting any other measures. Another simple means of getting those ears to open, especially when you have a cold, would be to blow out. This effectively means that you hold your nose and rather than blowing out or breathing out through one’s nose, one exerts gentle pressure on one’s ears. One should be very cautious when using this measure since it should never be excessive pressure. A lot of people disregard this and use this incorrectly to exert as much pressure on the blocked ear as possible. Blowing out aggressively can cause further damage and can be bad for your ears. Chewing gum is another old trick to help with blockage. This should typically be done all through one’s airplane flight so as to prevent the likelihood of a blocked ear in the first place. Swallowing also helps and since the act of chewing includes swallowing, this can be an effective measure. These few tips should help you when you are facing clogged ears. Do give them a try and remember that whatever you do for those ears, do so gently. If there still seems to be a problem with them, do check with the doctor or ear specialist.
