Allergic reactions affect many people, especially during the spring and the fall seasons when there is a high level of pollen present in the air. Other agents that can trigger allergic reactions include dust particles, smoke, dander and mold. Exposure to certain chemicals present in foods like peanut butter, citrus fruits, eggs and dairy products, wheat and corn, as well as in antibiotics and steroids may trigger the problem.

Processed foodstuff containing artificial additives and preservatives may also cause this problem. The body’s natural immune system reacts adversely to these factors and the thin mucus membrane lining the nostrils, mouth and lungs gets inflamed as a result in a majority of such cases. The accumulation of toxic substances in the body may also render a person more vulnerable to allergic reactions. The most common symptoms of allergies are dry coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, watering of the eyes and trouble in breathing.

There are a few basic precautionary measures that you should take to prevent allergic reactions of this kind. Make sure that the patient’s immediate environment is always clean. Wash the bed linen, carpets and curtains of your room regularly and dry these out in the sun in order to get rid of dust particles and mold that may trigger allergies. Keeping the windows closed, especially at dawn and dusk and during the pollinating seasons, is an easy and effective way of avoiding pollen that is commonly responsible for allergic symptoms. You may also use an air-conditioner in your room in order to keep your immediate atmosphere dust-free. It has also been observed that allergens are most active in a warm, humid environment. Thus, it is a good idea to use a dehumidifier in your room in order to reduce the chances of allergies. If you have pets at home, make sure that they are not allowed to snuggle up to the patient or get close to his food. Smoking in the vicinity of the patient should be avoided at all costs. In addition to these measures, you may also follow a few simple home remedies to solve the problem. Drinking a cup of warm peppermint tea often helps treat nasal congestion and irritation, and provides relief from coughing and sneezing. For another remedy, mix a teaspoon of salt in a cup of hot, distilled water and pour a few drops of this solution into your nostrils in order to get relief from the symptoms of allergy.
