How to Treat Constipation:
When the frequency of bowel movement is not more than thrice a week, the person is said to be constipated. Dry, hard stools are characteristic of this condition. Defecation, in such cases, is a very difficult, uncomfortable and painful process.
Dehydration or the excessive absorption of water by the colon leads to constipation. Hormonal changes, unhealthy lifestyles, illness, certain medication and stress can also be the cause of constipation. Loss of appetite, bloating, abdominal pain and a sensation of being full at all times are other symptoms of constipation. If left unattended to, constipation can lead to bowel obstruction and an inability to pass not only stools, but gas as well. Constipation increases the strain on the rectal veins and the anus, and this in turn can lead to conditions like hemorrhoids, piles, perianal hematoma and anal fissures. Therefore, constipation should not be ignored.
A healthy balance of fluids, good food, regular exercise and sufficient rest are crucial for the proper functioning of the body. Drinking plenty of water and juices helps in softening the stools and facilitate the smooth elimination of wastes. At least 8 glasses of water daily are recommended to prevent dehydration that makes stools difficult to pass. Grape juice is known for its laxative properties that prevent the accumulation of waste in the body. It also prevents the buildup of toxins in the colon. The juice of two lemons added to warm water makes an excellent tonic for relieving constipation. If you need to sweeten the concoction, use honey – a natural sweetener instead of sugar, as sugar is believed to hamper the digestion process leading to an increased buildup of wastes in the body.
Flax seeds are the best recommended when it comes to relieve constipation because of their high fiber content. Sprinkling a teaspoon of powdered flax seeds on any food preparation will prove beneficial in the treatment of constipation. Green leafy vegetables, nuts, whole grains and fruits are rich in fiber and abundant roughage that keep the stools soft and moist and promote smooth bowel movement. They are also easy to digest and provide the body with plenty of nutrients. Meats, cheese, ice cream and eggs should be avoided when a person is constipated or prone to constipation as these foods are high in fats and are comparatively difficult to digest. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and tobacco as these substances can aggravate the condition. Sufficient rest and adequate exercise will further ensure the smooth functioning of the body.
