The illness more commonly known as rheumatism is actually a form of arthritis that develops in the joints. Arthritis generally develops in two forms – rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints that is caused by wear and tear of the tissue that lies between them.
The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include a soreness and swelling of the joints with severe pain of the joints themselves. Arthritic pains tend to increase during the night, because it is at this time that the body is at complete rest and the repair of worn out tissues is being carried out. Besides this, the mind will focus on the pain that is being experienced. During the day, symptomatic pain is not as aggravating because of the fact that the mind is preoccupied with the events taking place around.
To a person suffering from any form of arthritis, be it rheumatoid or osteoarthritis, it is best that sour and spicy foods be avoided, because they are known to aggravate arthritic symptoms. Similarly, red meat and the consumption of organs such as liver or brain should be avoided because they lead to a rise in the level of uric acid, which causes further discomfort by causing an inflammation of the joints. Drinking plenty of water through the day is recommended because it washes out the system and cleans it of any impurities and also helps in lowering the levels of uric acid. Leafy green vegetables are low in fat and are also well known sources of nutrition. Healthy cartilage can be preserved and the immune system can be further strengthened by the consumption of Vitamin C, which is made available through fresh fruits and vegetables.
Other widely used methods of alleviating arthritic pains and swelling of the joints is carried out through a cold compress. A daily fifteen minute walk is helpful in losing excess weight that could probably be placing excessive pressure on the joints, causing them to swell. The consumption of fresh pineapple juice is known to be extremely beneficial in the treatment of arthritis, because of the enzyme bromelain, which helps to reduce inflammation and swelling. Water placed in a copper vessel overnight and taken the next morning is also known to be of great help in alleviating arthritic pains because of the fact that the water tends to gain some of the properties of copper, which is known to strengthen the musculoskeletal system.
