Pain in the joints of the leg, especially in the knees, ankles and feet, is often a symptom of arthritis. Sudden muscle contractions, accidental injury to the bones, tendons and ligaments, nervous disorders and improper blood circulation in the legs may also cause joint pains in the legs. Also, those who are overweight are at a greater risk of suffering from this problem, as the joints of the legs have to bear the excess pressure caused by the mass of the upper body which results in faster wear and tear of muscles and bone tissues.
Deficiency of certain essential minerals and vitamins may also be the reason behind joint pains. Wearing footwear that is not comfortable or that disturbs the natural balance and distribution of body weight across the feet may also be responsible for the problem.
There are a few basic rules that you should follow in order to solve this problem. Regular physical exercise keeps the muscles of the legs in good shape and prevents them from contracting. Unless otherwise advised by your doctor, you should walk, jog or swim for at least an hour every day. However, if the pain has surfaced after an injury, you should give your legs adequate rest. Alternate application of hot and cold compresses on the joints is known to bring relief from pain and swelling caused by injuries. This is also useful in relieving joint pain if the symptoms have been caused by localized fluid retention by tissues. It is also advisable to drink at least 10 glasses of water every day, and a sufficient amount especially before exercising, as this prevents dehydration and the consequent contraction of muscles. In addition, you should include natural sources of calcium and magnesium in your diet, such as milk and dairy products, eggs, soy products, nuts, whole grains and cereals, fresh fruits and green vegetables. A useful home remedy for treating joint pains is to soak a wad of cotton or a soft towel in a solution of vinegar and water, and place it across the affected area for 15 minutes. For another remedy, dry out a substantial amount of fenugreek leaves in the sun for a few days, then grind them to a fine powder, mix a teaspoon of this powder in a glass of water every morning and drink this infusion. Massaging the joints with mildly heated mustard oil is also helpful in relieving pain.
