A corn, technically known as a callus, is a small portion of the skin that becomes thick and tough, and affects the subcutaneous tissue as well. They are shaped like an inverted pyramid, with the tip pointing inwards into the skin, and turn a deep shade of brown if allowed to persist for long. Corns mostly appear on toes and the soles of feet, and can be quite painful at times.
The main reason for the appearance of corns is friction and pressure experienced by the skin due to wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes. Thus, the best way to prevent corns from appearing is to wear shoes that fit you well, especially when you are involved in playing outdoor games or walking long distances.
There are quite a few simple yet effective natural means of treating corns at home. One of the most popular of these is a paste made by grinding four or five sticks of licorice with half a teaspoon of mustard or sesame oil. This should be massaged every night at bedtime over the area where the corn has just started to appear. This helps make the skin cells soft, and cures the corn in its initial stages. You could also cover the area with a thin slice of lemon and tie it up with a piece of gauze before going to bed at night. This relives the pain to a great extent, and gradually gets rid of the corn. You may also use a slice of raw potato in the same way as a poultice for a few hours during the day. Another excellent natural remedy for corns is to apply the juice of raw papaya on the corn thrice a day. Alternatively, you may also apply the juice of a pineapple on the corn to treat it naturally. You may also crush a few green figs to extract the milky juice that oozes out of them and gently massage the skin around the corn with this juice twice a day. This will get rid of the corn within a week. A popular remedy for making the corn go away naturally is to grind a small piece of chalk with a little water, and to smear the corn with this paste once every day. You should also dissolve two tablespoons of Epsom salts in a bowl of lukewarm water and wash your feet with this solution every morning and evening to make the corn disappear.
