Killing Lice on Head

How to remove lice?
(12 Mar 2010)

When your child comes home scratching his or her head, alarm bells usually go off because of fear of head lice. Lice are a common problem facing school children, and these can even be passed on to adults. Because the only way to get this pest is from the direct method of head to head contact or close contact, schools usually take this problem very seriously, and some even have detailed policies on how to deal with such an issue.

The problem with head lice is that the matter is rather delicate since ignorant people often view a child who has lice as unclean. This is a major misconception since these lice simply need a human host, and they do not discriminate between clean and unclean. Another common misconception about head lice is that the child may have got these lice from playing with animals. One has to bear in mind that it is human contact which eventually results in the spread of these pests. Once the child gets them, it is rather easy for these lice to spread and feed on other members of the family via means such as sharing the same bedding. One of the biggest problems when trying to eliminate head lice is that they are very resistant and their nits (eggs) may even survive past the first round of treatment, leading to a recurring infestation.

One of the simplest ways to deal with this problem which is also the most cost effective one is to get rid of lice manually. At the most you will have to invest in a fine tooth comb to help get to these lice. You usually get specially designed combs in either plastic or even metal varieties. Before you get started, it helps if you consider sectioning the child’s hair so that you can see better and you know that you have covered every area. You then run the comb through each partition, and kill any lice that get caught in the comb. Usually, it is easier to spot the nits especially since they prefer areas such as behind the ears or near the nape of your child’s neck. The problem with this method is the likelihood of missing a few lice or nits and dealing with them all over again. You can ask your doctor for a special shampoo to deal with this and repeat the treatment later. You will also have to treat other members of the family in case these lice have already spread.
