How to Prevent Eczema?

Eczema, medically known as atopic dermatitis, is a condition in which the skin becomes excessively dry, rough and itchy. Sometimes, small red bumps and blisters filled with fluid may also appear on the surface of the skin. Subsequently, irregular patches may develop on the skin, and then break into dry flakes.
Eczema is partly hereditary in nature, and is often triggered by physical contact with pollutants and allergens present in the atmosphere. Harsh chemicals present in detergents, soaps and certain cosmetic body products may also be responsible for causing eczema. The skin rashes may also be caused by excessive perspiration and therefore appear seasonally. Exposure to extremes of temperature and mental stress may also worsen the condition. This is not a contagious disease and mostly affects children, though the problem may persist into adulthood as well.
There are a few basic preventive measures you should take to avoid eczema. Wear clothes made of natural fabrics in order to allow air to pass through your garments freely as well as to soak up excess perspiration. Do not bathe in very warm water as this tends to rob the skin of its natural moisture and oil content, rendering it vulnerable to allergic reactions. You may also massage your skin with vitamin E oil soon after a bath to prevent excessive dryness of the skin. Also, check whether the problem is triggered due to the use of a certain brand of soap, cream or deodorant and immediately discontinue use if that is so. You should also make it a habit to apply a moisturizing sunscreen lotion on your skin whenever you step out into the sun. This protects the skin from the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun and reduces the chances of eczema. An effective natural means of treating eczema is to mix a teaspoon each of camphor and sandalwood powder with a little rose water and apply this paste gently on the affected portions of the skin. This helps make the skin softer and smoother, and reduces the itching to a great extent. Another useful remedy is to soak a few nutmegs in a cup of water overnight and apply the water on the skin the next morning. It is also believed that eating a couple of raw tomatoes every morning at breakfast is helpful in preventing eczema. You may also crush a handful of blueberry leaves, and gently massage the skin with the juice extracted from these.
