Home Remedies for Gingivitis

Irritated gum
(15 Apr 2010)

Probably one of the most underrated organs of the human body, the mouth helps perform a large number of essential functions that are essential to our daily existence on medical levels as well as social levels. Yet, you are likely to see every second person suffer from a gum infection, largely due to the fact that they have been ignoring their teeth and gums over a significant period of years. Almost every person will have advice to give about oral health, but very few will actually practice any of the techniques that they suggest.

Brushing your teeth has become more of a habit in today’s very hectic lifestyle, while finding the time to floss your teeth can be stretching your schedule too far. An irritation of the gums is the initial stage of the development of gingivitis, which is a complete and utter destruction of your teeth. If left unchecked, the condition will then progress to a stage where there is some amount of bleeding as well as inflammation of the gum tissue around the affected area. You will also notice the build up of plaque around the gum line and the bacteria present in the mouth will then release a toxic substance that is the cause of the gum irritation. If it is still ignored, in under a period of 24 hours, the plaque will turn into tartar and will then penetrate through the bone structure surrounding the teeth.

Good oral hygiene is essential in treating the condition and, thereby preventing it from spiraling out of control. Make sure your teeth remain clean at all times and prevent any accumulation of food particles to rest in your mouth for extended periods of time. Brush your teeth regularly with a soft bristled toothbrush and floss at least twice a day with toothpaste that contains fluoride. Rinsing your mouth with any dental rinse that contains amine fluoride is also likely to be very helpful in cleaning the areas of the mouth that cannot be accessed with a toothbrush. Avoid consuming and high sugar or high carbohydrate foods and beverages as they will allow the bacteria in the mouth that is causing the irritation to breed much faster. Whenever you brush your teeth, it is a good idea to add a drop of tea tree oil on top of the toothpaste to help relieve the irritated gums. As a temporary measure to alleviate any irritation to the gums, you can try holding a pack of ice to the side of your face where you feel the pain is most intense.
