Ears can become clogged or blocked on account of several factors. Most commonly, ears get clogged after a severe cold or bacterial infection of the tonsils, throat or sinus or sometimes, certain kinds of allergies of infections cause fluid to build up in the ear. Sometimes water can get trapped in the ear, after a swim or a shower and cause a ‘blocked’ sensation.
If there is a rupture in your eardrum or you suffer from high blood pressure, you may experience a blockage in the ear. It is essential, therefore, to identify the nature of blockage because a build up of fluid that results from an infection could be potentially dangerous and may even lead to deafness. You should seek medical help if you experience frequent pain in your ear or if the ‘blocked’ sensation persists without responding to treatment at home. You can however, try a few simple home remedies to treat the blockage in your ear for immediate relief before seeking medical attention.
A few precautions are necessary to prevent blockage of the ears. Avoid using sharp instruments for cleaning the ears as they may cause permanent damage to your ear drum. Avoid plugging your ears with cotton when they are blocked as this may push wax or other build ups further back in your ear. If you are prone to a sensation of ‘blockage’ in your ear during a flight, make sure to chew gum for the duration of the flight to avoid blocked ears.
Applying a few drops of warm olive oil in your blocked ear will provide immediate relief. Warm mineral oil applied in the ear everyday will help remove any blockage. Warm oil melts wax or any other blockage in your ear to allow for easy removal. Glycerine applied to the ear everyday also helps with clogged ears. Steam is also an effective method of relieving blocked ears. One way of using steam to remove blocks in the ear is to stay in the bathroom for ten minutes after a hot shower. Hot water (moderately hot) also helps release blockages in the ear. A mixture made with equal amounts of hydrogen peroxide and warm water applied to the ear helps melt build ups that cause blockages. Apply a few drops of grain alcohol twice everyday to help relieve blockages in the ear. A few drops of vinegar applied to the ear also help relieve clogged ears.
