Ear infection or inflammation of the ear can affect the middle our outer parts of the ear. When the middle ear is affected, the infection is known as otitis media and this leads to problems in hearing accompanied by itching or pain in the infected ear, discharge of a fluid from the affected area and sometimes even dizziness or fever. Otitis media is generally caused by the blockage of the Eustachian tube because of a foreign particle in the ear or even due to a cold.

This leads to a build up of fluid in the ear and consequently an infection inside the ear. Otitis externa, affects the external ear, in which case you have reduced hearing abilities with an itching in the outer ear accompanied by a pain that stretches up to the jaw. Sometimes there is fluid discharge and inflammation of the outer ear.

Otitis externa is caused when the ear stays in moist or wet environments for long periods. Thus people who swim a lot of those who have been wet for a long period can suffer from otitis externa. Sometimes certain skin allergies can also cause otitis externa.

In case of an ear infection, you should first ensure that the ear is completely rid of any water. Although a warm water flush can normally be used for the removal of offending particles in the ear, do not use it because this is not the cause of your problem and you will only aggravate the situation. If you have an ear infection, the fungus or bacteria causing it will need a warm moist climate to survive. Use a blow dryer held around 15 inches away from your ear; pull your ear lobe down to dry your ear properly. This will prevent the spread of the infection. You should avoid inserting any foreign object inside your ear, including the cotton buds available to clean ears. If you are suffering from intense pain due to the infection, you can apply a warm cloth over the ear for relief. Alternately you can prepare a poultice by boiling and mashing 3 to 4 cloves of garlic, adding a pinch of salt to it and wrapping it in a piece of woolen cloth. This is very effective for reducing pain and also to treat the infection. Put a few drops of garlic juice directly into the affected ear for immediate relief from the pain as well as to treat the infection. Basil leaves also have anti-bacterial properties that help to treat infections, so you can extract some juice from the leaves of a basil plant and put 3 to 4 drops in each ear. Similarly a few drops of olive oil put in each ear can also help to treat the infection. Apart from this you should increase your intake of Vitamin C and zinc since these help to fight the infection and boost your immune system.
