Indigestion refers to a condition in which the stomach excretes either insufficient or excess digestive enzymes, leading to various digestive problems. The common complaints associated with indigestion include bloating due to gas, flatulence, acidity or heart burn and discomfort or pain in the abdominal region. The main reason for indigestion are poor eating habits and a faulty diet, but other factors such as allergies to certain food products, mild food poisoning, inadequately cooked food or food cooked in poor hygiene conditions and lack of exercise also contribute to problems of digestion.
Women often suffer from indigestion during their menstrual period because of the immense hormonal upheaval their body goes through. In order to treat indigestion at home, using simple and natural home remedies, you have to first ensure that your diet is healthy and balanced, and does not include excessively spicy, fried and greasy foods, refined sugar and wheat products and junk food. It important to consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole wheat flour, grains, cereals, nuts and seeds, in addition to a healthy proportion of fish, eggs, poultry or red meat. You should also ensure that you get some exercise daily, especially if you lead a primarily sedentary lifestyle. Light exercises, aerobics and sports such as tennis and swimming are good for keeping the digestive system healthy. Even a brisk walk for 45 minutes is sufficient for mobilizing digestion.
Apart from this there are several other home remedies that can help to treat indigestion. The best way to treat and prevent chronic indigestion is to drink a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon and 1 tsp of honey, first thing every morning on an empty stomach. This helps to regulate bowel movements and stimulates your entire system. Lemon juice is excellent for fighting bacteria in the abdominal tract and thus helps to treat and avoid most digestive problems. If you are suffering from accumulation of gas in the abdominal area, accompanied by heart burn and an uneasy feeling, you can 1 glass of water with 1 tbsp of baking soda for instant relief. Alternately you can consume 1 tsp of asafetida seeds with some rock salt. Asafetida seeds soaked overnight in a bowl of water can be regularly consumed with the water first thing in the morning to prevent indigestion. Coriander seeds and fenugreek seeds are also similarly beneficial for indigestion. Sipping on chamomile tea is beneficial for reducing the build-up of gas in the abdominal region and helps to soothe the spasmodic pains in the stomach. Peppermint tea is also recommended for indigestion.
