My wife suffers from gout and because of the medication regime she is on. Doctors can not prescribe any help. Can you suggest something that may help her?

Gout is a kind of arthritis that attacks the bone joints and causes severe pain, inflammation, and swelling. The pain generally occurs in irregular cycles and usually affects the joints of big toe, knees, and wrists. Gout is a caused when urate crystals start depositing at the joints.
In a healthy body uric acid concentration is normal and it is excreted with urine. However, due to several reasons – like too much of uric acid production in the body or the kidney being unable to flush out uric acid efficiently – the uric acid concentration in the blood goes up and they start crystallizing. These urate crystals deposit on bone joints and start causing gout pain.
Besides kidney dysfunction, alcohol abuse, faulty lifestyle, certain medication, and hereditary reasons may also raise the chances of gout significantly. Although gout can happen to anybody, the elderly and menopausal women are found to be more vulnerable. It is best to get gout treatment at the earliest because a delay in treatment will worsen the condition and complicate things further.
You can try out a few home remedies that can be helpful to your wife for treating her gout flares. Berries and other dark-skinned fruits are considered to be good for gout treatment as they lower the level of uric acid in blood. Therefore, eat blackberries, cherries, and dark colored grapes as much as possible. Orange and lime, which contain vitamin C, are also known to be helpful for remedying gout. Drink sufficient amount of water every day so that it helps flush out as much uric acid through urine as possible. Also, cut down on animal protein as they raise the level of uric acid significantly. Gout patients should avoid dairy products and red meat as far as possible. Substitute animal protein in your diet with plant protein. Ensure that her diet contains plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, cereals, nuts, sprouts, etc. To relieve the gout pain, alternate hot and cold compress treatment is very beneficial. Take a hot water bag and press it on the affected area for 15-20 minutes. Thereafter, take an ice bag and place it on the same area. Such alternate hot and cold therapy helps to relieve the pain.
In most cases the gout pain comes and goes on its own, often suddenly. However, for a complete treatment, it is advisable follow the remedies for some time, even when the gout pain is absent.
