Stretch marks are visible pale lines on the surface of the skin. They are initially pink in color but with the passage of time they turn whitish. These marks are basically the very thin upper layer of the skin (epidermis) which is drawn out over gaps in the inner layer of skin (dermis).

These marks mostly affect the hips, chest/breasts, thighs and the abdominal region. The medical term for this condition is “striae gravidarum”, and it results from sudden weight gain or loss, especially in women during pregnancy, rapid growth of the body during adolescence, and other physical factors like prolonged disease and exposure to chemicals in medicines. Hormonal changes can also contribute to the appearance of stretch marks.

Though it is difficult to get rid of stretch marks completely, especially if they have been on the skin for long period of time, it is possible to lighten them using a few simple home remedies. One of the most popular natural remedies for stretch marks is to apply olive oil thrice a day on the affected area. Apply aloe vera gel on the stretch marks every day after bath. This gradually lightens the marks. Add a drop or two of chamomile oil and seven drops of a carrier oil (avocado, jojoba or sweet almond oil) into an ounce of lavender oil and apply this mixture on the stretch marks regularly to lighten them. Massaging the affected area gently with this aroma oil is also known to reduce stretch marks. Another popular home remedy is to apply cocoa butter on the stretch marks twice every day. This lightens the marks perceptibly. Exfoliate the affected areas regularly with an apricot scrub to reduce the scars and make your skin smoother. You may also make a skin solution by adding the liquid from 4 capsules each of vitamin A and vitamin E into a mixture of half a cup each of virgin olive oil and aloe Vera. Mix all the ingredients well and refrigerate it. This can be applied externally on the affected area daily. Eating nuts and grains rich in zinc also prevents stretch marks from becoming more prominent. Vitamin K is also known to prevent the appearance of stretch marks, so including leafy vegetables, tomatoes, dairy products and other food items rich in this vitamin also helps. Exercising regularly helps tone up muscles and prevents the appearance of stretch marks. Using a mixture of calendula oil and wheat germ oil on the skin also reduces stretch marks.
