Sinuses are four pairs of hollow cavities that connect the nasal passage to the space between the nostrils. Sinusitis generally follows common infections like cough and cold and influenza. The germs that cause these infections sometimes get into the sinus chambers and cause the accumulation of pus or fluid in them, leading to the inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the nasal cavity.
The most common symptoms of sinusitis are mild to severe headaches, pressure around the eyes, forehead and nose, sneezing, nasal congestion or occasional discharge, difficulty in breathing, and sometimes even fever and loss of appetite.
A few remedial measures can be taken to treat sinusitis at home. Drink lots of hot fluids in order to thin the mucous that obstructs the nasal cavity.
Inhaling steam from a covered hot water tub also helps relieve congestion. You can also mix peppermint or eucalyptus oil into a tub of hot steaming water and inhale the vapor to open up the obstructed nasal cavity. Eating lots of mangoes during the season is also known to prevent sinusitis, as the fruit is a natural source of vitamin A, which helps in the formation of epithelium that defends the nasal tract against infections. Use generous amounts of pungent spices like ginger and garlic in cooked food to defend yourself against sinus infections. A dose of raw ginger and garlic consumed with every meal is also of great help. Alternatively, drink ginger tea at frequent intervals to cure sinusitis. Add a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds into 250ml of water and boil this the half the water evaporates. Now drink this tea at regular intervals three or four times a day. This is an effective remedy for fever and nasal congestion caused by sinus infections. You could also tie a teaspoon of black cumin seeds in a piece of thin cotton cloth and use this as an inhaler. A teaspoon of roasted and ground cumin seeds mixed with 20gms of honey can also be consumed to treat sinus pains. Carrot juice is also known to be an effective remedy for sinusitis. Consume the juice of a carrot separately or in combination with beetroot, cucumber or spinach juice every day. Since vitamin A is a natural agent that helps build a strong mucous membrane in the nasal and throat cavity, include foods like yoghurt, egg yolk and leafy vegetables in your diet to prevent sinusitis.
