The thyroid gland plays an important role in the body functions and any imbalance in the secretion of the thyroid hormones causes many changes in the body. Despite being a common condition, hypothyroidism is very often ignored because of the symptoms which are not alarming in the initial stages. Hypothyroidism mainly manifests itself in the form of fatigue, sensitivity to cold, frequent headaches, swollen eyes, irritability and depression accompanied by hair loss and weight gain.

The metabolism rate of the body and consequently, the heat and energy produced by the body are reduced because of this condition and the insufficient secretion of the hormones causes the body to retain water. Both of these factors are responsible for weight gain and if the condition is ignored for a long time, then it can become a serious problem. Women are especially prone to hypothyroidism and the consequent weight gain, because of the massive hormonal fluctuations to which their body is subjected especially during pregnancy and menopause.

It is thus important to get adequate treatment for hypothyroidism, which focuses on restoring the normal balance of the body, by working on various factors such as the diet, environmental toxins, liver disease, stress and exercise.

Diet is a key factor in treating hypothyroidism and you should consult a dietician to plan a proper diet chart for you, so that you get the adequate nutrition, at the same time avoiding the foods that can make the condition worse. You should avoid the foods that can contribute to lowering the levels of thyroid hormones in the body. Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, rutabaga, radishes, turnip, soy and millet are some of the vegetables that affect the thyroid levels in the body and should never be consumed raw. While it is true that the manner in which the vegetables are cooked can change their thyroid inhibiting properties, you should try and avoid them as far as possible.  However you should increase your consumption of food products such as seafood, eggs, meat, parsley bananas and salt, which are a rich source of iodine, since iodine is needed to produce thyroid hormones. You should also increase your intake of foods such as wheat, oats, dairy products, fish and meat which contain tyrosine, an important element in the production of thyroid hormones from iodine. Apart from this, you should try and boost your metabolism by having several small meals instead of 2 or 3 large meals. Focus on getting the essential nutrients such as proteins and vitamins and avoid excess carbohydrates and fats. Exercise is another key factor in improving the metabolism and fighting hypothyroidism and the consequent weight gain. You should start with a 45 minute brisk walk, gradually increasing the exercise to jogging, aerobics or light sports as your stamina improves. This will not only help you to lose weight and regain confidence in yourself but also improve the metabolism of your body and speed-up the treatment of this condition.
