Height is dependant on several factors including heredity, environment, diet and exercises. It is thus important to provide the right environment, healthy diet with a proper balance of essential nutrients and the right exercises in order to get a good height. It is said that the main growth spurt occurs during adolescence and there is not much height increase after that.
However certain simple measures can help increase the height slightly even after this growth spurt. The spinal column is an important factor in height and thus it is important to understand the way the spine functions and take good care of it by maintaining a proper posture. Slouching not only affects height in terms of appearance, it also has physiological affects by stunting your growth, so you should always sit and stand straight, so that the necessary muscles and ligaments in the spine are kept strong and flexible.
It is equally important to get proper sleep since the body uses this time to restore itself. It has been found that you can grow up to half an inch while sleeping, if you get the adequate number of hours of sleep and sleep in the right position. Diet also plays a key factor in growth, so you should concentrate on nourishing your body with the right balance of essential nutrients, especially Vitamins and Calcium, important for growth.
Apart from this, there are several exercises that can aid in increasing height. The forward bend exercises the muscles in the calves, hamstrings, back and neck, increasing the strength and elasticity of the spine. In this exercise you should stand straight with your legs around 6 inches apart and slowly raise your arms above your head while maintaining a steady breathing. Next you should bend forward till you can touch the floor with the tips of your fingers and hold the position for 2 minutes before returning slowly to the standing position. Repeat this exercise daily, gradually reducing the distance between your feet to increase the difficulty in touching the floor. As it becomes easier to touch the floor with your fingertips, you can start touching the floor by placing the palms flat on the floor. You can also do some chin-ups and pull-ups daily to exercise the muscles in the arm and back, but remember to do only one type of exercise in the beginning to avoid hurting yourself. In the pull-up you have to grasp a set of parallel bars firmly and use your strength to pull your body up till your neck and hands are at the same level, before slowly lowering your body and returning to a relaxed position. In contrast, in the chin-up, you have to pull your body with a downward force till it reaches your chin. This stretches the muscles in the lower back and eliminates the effects of compression of the spinal column.
