ADHD is the acronym for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This is a behavioral disorder that often affects children, causing their attention span to be abnormally short and making them hyperactive. In children the most common symptoms of this condition are distractedness, inability to concentrate on any work for too long, and sudden, unpredictable conduct.

Other common symptoms include acute problems in learning new concepts and extremes of emotional behavior. Though this condition is commonly associated with children, in the absence of proper treatment it can affect the patient even during adolescence and into adulthood. Research has shown that it is primarily heredity that causes ADHD.

Children of those parents who have had a history of ADHD are naturally more vulnerable to this condition. Yet, scientists have not been able to trace the cause to a single offending gene. It is believed that it is that certain parts of the brain are sometimes unable to produce essential chemicals, which causes this disease in adults, or alternatively, that the parts of the brain that are responsible for aiding concentration do not function properly in ADHD patients. Also, excessive consumption of alcohol and tobacco smoke by a pregnant mother is supposed to make the unborn child more prone to ADHD. Though it has been popularly held that additives like artificial sweetening and coloring agents in manufactured food products trigger off this condition, recent research suggests that this might not really be the case. Stress, emotional trauma or the inability to adjust with one’s social circumstances may also aggravate the condition, but a one-to-one correspondence between these factors and the disease has not yet been established. Also, there is no single standard method of diagnosing ADHD, as the symptoms and the intensity of this condition vary from person to person.

Though it is not possible to completely cure ADHD through natural means alone, a few simple rules may be followed at home to improve the condition. Consuming large quantities of whole grains, cereals, raw and leafy vegetables and fruits is an effective, natural way of supplying the body with essential minerals and vitamins, which maintain the general health of the brain. Reducing the intake of possible allergens like chocolate, eggs, milk products, and readymade foods containing artificial flavors is also supposed to help. Omega 3 fatty acids are natural chemicals that keep the nerves in good condition, so eat fish and flax seeds, which are rich in these fats as it will help to stabilize and improve your nervous conditions.
