For immediate help with constipation there are two choices below:

Vitamin C and Magnesium -- Take up to 5000mg of vitamin C and 1,000mg of magnesium. Only do this when constipation is severe. Vitamin C and magnesium at high levels causes diarrhea and so should help get things moving. You can use 500mg to 1000mg of Vitamin C and 400mg of magnesium a day to prevent constipation in the future

Cascara Sagrada -- This herb has a powerful laxative effect by triggering contractions in the colon. Do not use it for longer than seven days.

To keep from having constipation in the future:

  • Drink lots of fluids.
  • Eat prunes -- an old folk remedy
  • A high-fiber diet is helpful. You can use oat bran or flaxseed as part of  your meals or you could use pysllium seed as a supplement.
  • Drink aloe vera juice to balance intestinal flora and to alleviate constipation.
  • Eat a diet rich with raw vegetables and fruits.

Very common Ayurvedic medicine for constipation used by many Ayurvedic physicians is Triphala. It is a powder made by grinding three kinds of fruits or herbs. This powder is now available in many western countries. 3 to 6 gms. of this powder taken at the time going to bed with warm water or milk helps in having a clean bowel motion the next morning.
