Remedies for tongue bit injury

If you have bitten your tongue so badly that it hasn’t healed in three days, it must be a serious wound. It would be best to consult a doctor about this, as the wound could get infected. There are some easy home remedies you can use to help speed up the healing process. Among the most effective methods you can use at home to keep infection at bay is to rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide. Take a mixture of equal parts of water and hydrogen peroxide and use it to rinse your mouth thoroughly. This will ensure that your blister is well sanitized and therefore speed up th healing process. Do this every hour, and make sure you do not swallow any of it. Hydrogen peroxide is certainly not good for the stomach lining.

Since you are having trouble eating, you can numb your tongue before you sit down to eat. Put a couple of ice cubes in a glass of water and swirl it around. Take a large sip of this cold water and swish it around in your mouth. Once the water in your mouth has warmed up a little, spit it out, take a sip from the glass and repeat the process all over again. Do this for about 10 minutes or so and you will notice that your mouth and tongue have become almost completely numb. You will now find it easier to chew your food. Make sure that you eat only bland food like Steamed vegetables and soups. Carrots, apricots and spinach are rich sources of Vitamin A while sunflower seeds and walnuts are rich in Vitamin E. These vitamins help to repair damaged skin. Aside from these Vitamins, Zinc too is essential for tissue repair. Foods like green peas, black beans and Yogurt are rich in zinc. Make sure that you include these foods in your daily diet as this will optimize the healing process. If the pain is most unbearable while chewing, you can also consider blending your vegetables. This may sound extremely unpalatable but you can always treat yourself to a soothing cold milkshake or an ice cream after your meal. Avoid sugar as much as possible as this will slow down the healing process. If you need to sweeten your milkshake, you can use honey instead.

Another excellent remedial measure would be to drink a glass of warm milk to which a teaspoon of turmeric powder has been added each night before bedtime. This will ensure that the anti septic properties of the turmeric powder are working on healing your body from inside as well as the surface.

Relieve Tongue Bite Pain

Tongue bites are more common than you might think but they usually heal quickly and on their own. Simple pressure to the area and keeping the tongue clean is enough to stop a tongue from bleeding. However, in some cases (such as yours), a tongue bite may cause bleeding or a cut that does not heal easily. In such situations, you can reduce bleeding and speed up the healing process by:

  • Washing your hands with soap and water before touching your tongue. It may be advisable to use thin rubber gloves to prevent an infection of the cut or wound.
  • Remove any loose or foreign objects from the mouth such as chewing gum or tongue piercing.
  • If the bleeding is profuse, sit up and tip your head forward so that the blood flows out of the mouth rather than back into the throat.
  • Use a piece of gauze or a small washcloth and apply pressure on the wound that is bleeding. Continue to press down on the cut until the bleeding stops or lessens. This could take up to 15 minutes so do not worry. Refrain from lifting the cloth every few minutes to check if the bleeding stops. What is needed instead is a constant pressure on the area to stop the bleeding. If the cloth becomes too bloody, replace with a fresh cloth to keep the process as clean and hygienic as possible.
  • For small cuts, a cold compress may help slow down the flow of blood and improve the coagulation process. You can make a cold compress by wrapping a cube or two of ice in a clean cloth and applying this to the area of the cut.
  • Once the bleeding has stopped, rinse your mouth with cold water. This helps clean the mouth of blood and keeps the tongue clean and wet and speeds up the healing process. A rise with an antiseptic mouthwash or a hydrogen peroxide solution may also help reduce the chance of any infection.
  • If the tongue is sore after the bleeding stops, you may apply ice to the area to reduce any swelling and pain.
  • A painkiller such as aspirin may also help reduce the pain and discomfort but if the tongue is still bleeding choose an acetaminophen over aspirin as the latter can cause more bleeding. Over-the-counter numbing gels may also provide fast relief.
  • If the above steps do not help stem the bleeding, see a doctor immediately as you may require stitches.
