Cold sores or fever blisters are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 which usually enters the system during childhood after contact with contaminated saliva. The virus can lie dormant in the nervous system for several years before it gets activated due to a number of reasons ranging from infections, fever, and common cold to exposure to the sun or stress. Sometimes hormonal changes or allergies to certain food products can also trigger the herpes simplex virus and lead to the eruption of sores on the lips and around the nose and mouth.

It is usually difficult to treat cold sores completely once the virus has entered the body, but there are several simple home remedies that can help to reduce the discomfort caused by the blisters.

Remember that the blisters are highly contagious and touching can lead to secondary contamination. As far as possible avoid touching the cold sores or poking them since this can lead to bacterial infections and aggravate the condition.

If you have touched them, always wash your hands immediately to avoid spreading the infection. You can carry a hand sanitizer with you at all times, since it is not always possible to wash your hands. Since these blisters normally occur on the lips and around the mouth, you should avoid using all cosmetic products, especially lipsticks while you have cold sores. However, it is equally important to protect your lips from the harmful effects of exposure to the sun and wind. If you cannot avoid stepping out in the sun, ensure that your lips are protected with a good lip balm that contains sunscreen ingredients before you step out. You can also apply petroleum jelly on your lips to protect them and to speed up the healing process . In addition to this, you can apply an ice pack on the sores for soothing relief from the pain. Sipping on iced drinks and smoothies also provides similar relief, but try and avoid drinks with added colors and preservative agents. You can also apply cold milk on the sores by soaking a cotton ball in milk and gently dabbing it on the blisters. This helps to soothe the pain and speeds up the healing process. If you start doing this at the first sign of a blister you can help to control the infection. Since cold sores are often triggered by stress, you can increase your intake of zinc to help you deal better with stress. Finally, remember to throw away the toothbrush you were using while you had the blisters. This will reduce chances of recontamination. Also, remember that if you are suffering from chronic attacks of cold sores, you must visit a doctor for adequate treatment.
