Human height is affected both by genetic make-up and environmental factors. We cannot alter his genetic makeup, of course, but we can certainly control the environmental factors related to body height. However, it should be kept in mind that growth in children may vary individually.

There may be phases of slow growth followed by a phase of rapid growth. Unless, there is severe nutritional deficiency, which is unlikely since you have mentioned that he is following a proper diet, you have no cause for alarm.

Exercise and sports should be encouraged as they help make the body more flexible and increases the secretion of growth hormone.

Here are a few exercises that may be practiced by your son. First exercise: Stand firm and inhale deeply while the arms are lifted parallel to the ground up to shoulder level. Remain in that position for some time and then raise the arms even higher and take the arms backwards as far as possible. Then exhale and get back to original posture and repeat this several times. Second exercise: Stretch out the arms from both sides of your body and raise them to the shoulder level so that they forms a right angles. Raise the shoulders higher while standing on the toes and then get back to earlier posture and then repeat the exercise a few more times. Third exercise: Stretch the arms forward up to shoulder height and inhale deeply. Raise the arms above the head and move them in a circular way. Then, exhale slowly and get back to original posture and get ready to repeat a few more times.

Besides the exercises, you may also need to make a few changes in the diet. Take special care to introduce good amount of protein- and calcium-rich foods in the diet as they help hormone secretion and bone development in the body, respectively. Protein can be sourced from milk, meat, eggs, and pulses. Calcium can be sourced from dairy products, nuts, seeds, broccoli, orange, and beans. Green vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts, cereals, whole grains, lean meat, fish, eggs, and milk are full of essential nutrients and should be fed regularly. As far as possible, avoid giving the child any fast food or preserved food (like frozen, canned, and tinned food items). If his nutritional intake is not sufficient, you can also give him supplements that are easily available in drug stores.

However, you can monitor his height for the next nine months to a year and if it has not increased, take him to the doctor for a routine checkup.
