A UTI or urinary tract infection is basically a bacterial infection of any part of the urinary tract, from the urethra to the kidneys. Usually, it is the urinary bladder that is affected by such infections, and this is known as cystitis. This kind of urinary tract infection is usually quite mild, and can be treated using home remedies.
However, remember that there is always the risk of the infection getting out of hand and reaching the kidneys, and this is a dangerous situation that should be avoided at all costs. Therefore, if your urinary tract infection persists for more than a couple of days, you should visit your doctor immediately. Your doctor will quite certainly prescribe antibiotics, and although many people today prefer to avoid antibiotics, they are, in many cases necessary and even essential.
There are a few doctors who prescribe antibiotics unnecessarily and indiscriminately, which is mainly what has given antibiotics a bad name, apart from the unpleasant side effects that sometimes occur. However, if your doctor is responsible and careful, he or she will prescribe antibiotics only if necessary, and in such cases, it is better to deal with the side effects rather than allow the infection to spread.
For a mild urinary tract infection, the best treatment is to drink cranberry juice, as well as lots of water so as to flush out the bacteria from your system. Cranberry juice makes the urine acidic, which is thought to destroy some of the bacteria, and also contains other chemicals that make it difficult for the bacteria to stay in the urinary tract. In the meanwhile, it is advisable to avoid sexual intercourse, and wash your genitals several times a day. A salt water douche is sometimes recommended, but this is best avoided, as douching often causes more problems than it solves. Since you will be drinking a lot of water, you will feel like urinating very often, and it is extremely important that you do not resist this urge. The point of drinking lots of water is to flush out the bacteria from your bladder, and if you hold your urine in, you will instead allow the bacteria to multiply.
This regimen needs to be followed strictly for the next two days. As mentioned before, if the infection persists for longer than that, or even if you are prone to frequent infections, then you need proper medical treatment
