Bad breath is almost always treated best when treated by a dentist. Trying to mask bad breath by the use of mouth fresheners, mouth washes, toothpastes and whatever other products are available out in the market is not the best option. Bad breath is an indicator that something is wrong with one’s mouth – some infection or tooth decay may have occurred.
This always needs to be treated rather than masked. If the cause is not found to be oral there are various other clinics that specialize in breath odors. For some this problem can cause a serious inhibition to social interaction, in which case it is also advisable to visit a mental health professional.
What can you do? Well, if the problem is not too serious then a few simple steps can greatly reduce your problem of bad breath:
- Brush Your Teeth Regularly: This is the most effective way to counter bad breath. Bad breath comes from poor levels of oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth before going to bed is a very good idea. When we eat, food particles get lodged in our teeth. If they are not removed they start to decompose, causing bad odor in the mouth. Brushing your teeth will ensure that these particles are dislodged and no tooth decay occurs.
- Dental Floss: Flossing your teeth is also one of the very effective ways of maintaining oral hygiene. When we consume fibrous foods, especially, meats the food gets stuck between our teeth and in our cavities. Using dental floss to clean in-between teeth or using tooth picks to clean cavities is a good idea.
- Clean Your Tongue: Most people overlook the importance of cleaning the tongue. Using a tongue cleaner is also an effective way to maintain oral hygiene.
- Watch what you eat: Surprisingly what foods we consume can also be the cause of bad breath. Rinse your mouth after every meal with water. Avoid too much of coffee as this tends to increase the chances of breath being bad.
- Drink Water: Drink plenty of water or fluids to keep the mouth fresh and moist. After consuming dairy products such as milk, gargle with water to clean your mouth.
- Use a Mouth Wash: Using a mouth wash is also a good idea, however, do so on your dentist’s recommendation. There are various chewing gums and other such products available in the market that will keep your breath fresh and will prevent your mouth from going excessively dry.
You should also eat plenty of fresh green vegetables and fruits. Rinse mouth thoroughly after consuming fibrous veggies or fruits. Visit your dentist regularly for a routine check up for tooth decay. Have periodical check-ups and get teeth cleaned at the clinic once in a while according to your dentist’s recommendation.
