A certain number of yeast resides in the genital area of our body at all times and usually the acid in the vaginal area keeps the yeast in control. However when this yeast increases beyond a certain level and starts growing rampantly in the body, it can lead to yeast infections. Yeast infections are caused due to a decrease in the level of acids in the vaginal area, due to various reasons such as hormonal changes during menstruation or pregnancy, consumption of birth control pills or other medications which interfere with the natural hormonal balances and a decrease in the body’s immunity levels.
The main symptoms if yeast infection include sever itching accompanied by a burning sensation, swelling and tenderness of the vulva. There can also be some yellowish-white vaginal discharge which may be accompanied by a fishy odor. The other symptoms include pain during sexual intercourse and burning sensation while urinating.
You should get yourself checked by a doctor who can determine the infection properly by conducting a proper test to diagnose the vaginal infection.
There are several ways that you can treat and prevent yeast infections. Probiotics, oten referred to as friendly bacteria, help to control and hinder the growth of candida albicans in the vagina, thus effectively treating the yeast infection. Since probiotics are available in abundance in yoghurt you should consume a bowl of fresh yoghurt with every meal. Alternately you can dip a sanitary napkin in curd and insert this in your vagina till the infection goes away. This helps to treat the infection by restoring the natural balance of fungus in the vaginal area. Use of boric acid vaginal suppositories is often recommended for yeast infections but this can cause extreme irritation and other side effects so proper caution should be taken while following this treatment. Another effective treatment for yeast infections is the use of tea-tree oil which has anti fungal properties. You can wipe your vaginal area with a diluted tea tree oil, since it is too strong to be used undiluted. Alternately you can put a few drops of tea tree oil in your tampon or sanitary napkin and insert it into the vagina. This is very effective for treating the yeast infection. In addition to all this, you can take several steps to prevent yeast infection by practicing safe sex and always using a condom during intercourse. You should avoid shaving the hair on your vulva since the hair prevents the skin from coming into contact with the chemicals present in various hygienic products. You should also avoid using perfumed tampons and sanitary products, douches and opt for cotton underwear instead of synthetic underwear. Avoid wearing tight jeans, pantyhose and underwear that do not allow the skin to breathe and never stay for too long in wet clothes.
