Infections of the herpes virus are also known as cold sores and manifest themselves typically in the form of blisters which ulcerate and form an upper crust or scab before they get healed and disappear. The symptoms begin with redness and inflammation of the affected area, with a slight tingling sensation for around 24 to 48 hours, before the blister appear. Since the herpes virus can lie dormant on your system for quite a long period, the incubation period for cold sores can be anything from 8 to 10 days after exposure to the virus to a couple of months.

If you think you have herpes you should consult a doctor for adequate treatment but there are several simple home remedies that help in treating herpes virus naturally.

Application of an icepack on the affected area, even before the appearance of the blisters, is effective in treating the inflammation and lowering the temperature of the body to enable it to fight the infection better. The tannin acid in tea has excellent anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties and thus you can apply used, cold tea bags on the affected areas.

Alternately you can prepare and cool some tea and use a piece of cotton swab dipped in the tea to wipe the affected areas. Honey also has excellent anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties and is excellent for all skin problems so you should apply some honey on the affected parts of the body and wash off with warm water after around 30 to 40 minutes. Daily consumption of a spoonful of honey is also recommended. Wiping the affected areas with a cotton swab dipped in a solution of baking soda or cornstarch in water can help to keep the infected area dry and speed the healing process. Another good home remedy that involves topical application is Aloe Vera. You can take the fleshy leaf of the Aloe Vera plant and slit it open using a knife to expose the juicy flesh inside. You can directly apply the juice from this flesh on your skin. If you do not have a plant at home, you can obtain some leaves from outside and cut them into pieces and store them in your refrigerator for a week to 10 days. This is excellent for healing the skin and treating the infection. You can also take a bath with some Epson salts added to the water to heal the blisters faster, especially if they are in the genital area.
