Being overweight can cause a lot of health-related problems. Some of the known health problems related with overweight person are diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart diseases. Besides these being overweight also increases the chance of arthritis, fatty liver disease, gall bladder disease, cancer, and stroke.


An overweight person is also likely to suffer general physical discomfort and social awkwardness.

There are several reasons that lead to abnormal increase in body weight. Most often it is caused by a diet that is rich in fats and high in calorie.


A lifestyle without any physical activity is also likely to make a person gain weight as the calorie consumed does not get a chance to burn and hence get converted to fat and stored in the body. Pregnancy, use of certain steroidal drugs, after-effects of quitting smoking, and some underlying diseases may also lead to abnormal gain in body weight. High body weight may also be a result of genetic make-up of a person – a person coming from a family overweight people is likely to have increased chance of being overweight.  

The first thing to do, when you are overweight, is to change your eating habits. Eat low calorie foods and so that your body doesn’t store up excess calories as fat. To make your diet low in calorie, you will need give up on animal foods like red meat and other sources of animal fat; instead, go for plant-based foods like green vegetables, fruits, whole grains, cereals, etc. You should also cut down on refined carbohydrates and sugar as they significantly increase calorie intake. There are some crash diets that claim to reduce weight in a very short period, but it is better not to follow them as they can create vitamin and mineral deficiency in the body, and creating further complications. Some common home remedies for weight loss are lemon juice and apple cider vinegar. Both lemon juice and apple cider vinegar are known to cut fats in the body and help reduce weight. You can mix lemon juice and apple cider vinegar in lukewarm water and make a drink. Adding a spoonful of honey in the drink can also be beneficial.

Besides dietary changes, it is also important that you make a habit of doing some regular exercise every day. You can walk, jog, or do mild aerobic exercises to begin with. A little physical every day helps you burn the extra calorie and reduce weight effectively.
