High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is a common health problem. High blood pressure develops in our body when the arteries offer more resistance to the blood flow. Hence, narrowing of arteries is a primary reason for increased blood pressure.

Blood pressure usually develops slowly, over years, and end up catching almost everybody.

High blood pressure is accompanied with symptoms like headache, dizziness, fatigue, labored breathing, palpitation of heart, and sometimes bleeding of nose. However, high blood pressure may also exist without showing any of these symptoms.

So, it is good to get a regular blood pressure check done so that it can be detected at its onset.

There are many contributing factors that lead to high blood pressure. Most often it is due a faulty lifestyle – prolonged consumption of saturated fat-rich foods, excessive smoking, too much use of salt in food, intake of caffeinated drinks, obesity, and lack of physical exercise.  Sometimes, blood pressure may also develop due to some underlying diseases in the body or due to the effect of certain drugs.

There are some common home remedies that you can try to treat high blood pressure. Most often a change in diet and some moderate exercise can do wonders to get your blood pressure under check. Garlic is considered effective in lowering blood pressure. Lemon and grapefruit are also known to help lower blood pressure. Dried and roasted seeds of watermelon are also known to be beneficial for lowering blood pressure. You can also drink water soaked with parsley, which is good for the arterial system. Raw vegetable juices are also good for high blood pressure patients. Prepare juices of carrot, spinach, or bitter gourd and drink up every morning. Cod liver oil, omega-3 fatty acids (available in sea fish), potassium-rich foods (available in vegetables and fruits), and calcium-rich foods (available in dairy products) are also known to help fight high blood pressure. Besides these, balance your diet to include good amount of fiber-rich green vegetable, fresh fruits, cereals, whole grains, sprouts, etc. Besides a good diet you also need to avoid certain things – avoid smoking, decrease the amount of salt in your food, limit your alcohol intake, avoid meat and eggs. It is also important to keep your weight under check. Set aside about 30 minutes each day for a daily routine of physical exercise, which can significantly help to lower the blood pressure level.

Get your blood pressure checked by a doctor regularly so that you can take preventive measures at the early stages. Follow the advice of doctors besides trying out the home remedies.
