Ear blockage can happen due to various reasons. The most common reason of ear blockage is due to formation of wax in the ear. However, ear blockage can also happen due to infection, physical obstruction like tumor, insertion of foreign objects, allergens, etc.
Earwax (also known as cerumen) production in the outer walls of the ear is a natural phenomenon by which the human ear protects itself.
The wax secretion is designed to trap dust, bacteria, and other allergens and protect the inner ear canal. However, sometimes, when the earwax production is above normal or the dried up wax is not cleaned away effectively, the ear canal may get blocked. The ear canal may also be blocked if the wax is pushed further inside while cleaning the ear.
Symptoms of blocked ear, besides decreased hearing, are – earache, stuffy feeling in the ear, and unusual noise in the ear.
Here are a few common home remedies that you can try out to get rid of ear blockage. The garlic oil and hydrogen peroxide you had been using is generally effective. You may continue using them they give you some relief. You can also try out baby oil and mineral oil. However, using these may only soften the earwax; you might still need to get the softened earwax cleaned. To drain out the softened earwax, you can try to put some drops of lukewarm water inside the ear. Then tilt your head or lie down in a position so that the water is held inside the ear for about 5 minutes. After the said time, tilt your head in the opposite direction so that the liquid is drained out of the ear. Besides warm water, this same procedure can also be carried out with warmed up olive oil. Once you are done with the procedure, dry up your ear with a towel or with a hair-drier. It is also to be noted that these procedures (earwax softening and cleaning) may be needed to be carried out multiple times before the earwax is cleaned up properly. It seems the steps you are currently taking are just softening the earwax for some time but since they are not being cleaned away properly, the ear blockage is not going away. However, if your ear blockage does not go away even after repeatedly following the remedial steps, please do consult a doctor and ask for expert medical advice.
Also, avoid using clips, pins, matchsticks, and other such objects to remove earwax as they may be harmful for the ear.
