Urinary tract infection or UTI is caused by bacteria infecting the urinary tract - that is kidneys, bladder or urethra. These bacteria encroach upon the urinary tract and reproduce, causing burning sensation, pain and sometimes bleeding while urinating. If UTI has infected the kidneys then one may suffers from fever, bouts of vomiting and nausea and backache and pain below the ribs.
Waste no time in tackling the issue in the earlier stages itself because it can develop into cystitis if your bladder is infected. Women are more prone to getting UTI, caused by sexual intercourse (which pushes the bacteria further inside the urethra), multiple sexual partners and holding back the urge to urinate. It’s very important that there is abundant flow of urine so that unwanted and toxic substances are washed away from the urinary tract. And that can be ensured by drinking lots of water and fresh juices. Intake of Vitamin C in your diet also helps a lot, since it creates acidic environment thus preventing the bacteria from growing and multiplying in the bladder and the urinary tract. Include food rich in minerals and other supplements in your daily diet. Enough intakes of milk, fruits and fresh vegetables maintain the alkaline content in urine. Avoid processed food with high acidic content like cheese, chocolate, dairy products, spicy food, caffeine, tea, oranges, strawberries, chicken and steak, alcohol, carbonated drinks like soda, aerated water and cigarettes. Wearing very tight clothes and undergarments also increases the chances of infection.
Try these home remedies that not only prevent UTI but also cure if you do develop the problem. A simple and most easily available remedy is baking soda. Make a decoction of 8 ounces of water and half teaspoon of baking soda and drink it to increase the acid-base balance of the acidic urine. Blue brinjal plant leaves have diuretic properties. Boil a few leaves in water and drink one ounce of the mix twice every day. Another method is to boil coriander seeds in water and drink the decoction to increase the urine flow. However, one of the most opted for remedies is boiling a few lotus petals with pink rose buds and taking the water in doses of an ounce thrice a day. It gives quick relief from burning and painful urination. Drink barley water, coconut water, fresh cranberry juice (drinking two to four ounce glasses every day prevent bacteria from clinging to the cells), rice starch water, buttermilk, dilute lime juice, betel leaf juice mixed with dilute milk all have diuretic properties and help in free urination. Antibiotics are an easy way out but then they won’t rid you of the problem permanently, which will recur every other month.
