Foot odor is caused by wearing shoes that have no proper ventilation. The human foot has more sweat glands that any other part of the body. Thus, when we sweat it comes out the most at our feet.

The excessive sweat combined with external bacteria is what causes the awful foot odor. In addition to this hair growing on the feet and the toes also adds to the intensity of the odor; as it provides an area for bacteria to breed as well. The socks that we wear are in direct contact with our feet therefore along with proper ventilation it is also important to wear socks that are of the right kind of material.

Socks that are made of polyester and nylon do not and cannot provide the same level of ventilation that cotton socks provide. A reduced level of ventilation leads to more perspiration and hence the growth of more odor causing bacteria. Thus the first step to getting rid of foot odor is to wear the right kind of shoes and socks.

The best way to rid your self of foot odor is to keep your feet hygienic and clean. Wash you feet regularly during the course of the day to reduce the amount of bacterial growth. When washing your feet make sure to always use a soap water solution. If possible it is better to use an antibacterial soap as it helps get rid of the bacteria in an effective manner. Once you have washed your feet properly make sure to dry them off and then put on a fresh pair of socks. A fresh pair of socks will be able to absorb the moisture better and hence reduce the level of bacterial growth. Use shoes that are made of a material that is conducive to the weather and take your shoes off as often as possible. Another way to deal with foot odor is using antiperspirants. Antiperspirants stop the release of sweat from your feet with the help of aluminum slats. These aluminum salts block your sweat ducts and hence reduce the growth of bacteria indirectly. There is a difference though between the uses of a deodorant and an antiperspirant as deodorants do not actually control the amount of sweat but rather control the odor. Along with this they also make the skin more acidic which helps in reducing bacterial growth. Avoid the use of antiperspirants as they can cause irritation and in rare cases contact dermatitis.
