Urinary tract infection, also known in the abbreviated form UTI, is usually a bacterial infection that happens in the urinary system, which includes kidney, bladder, ureters, and urethra. Although, commonly, the bladder and urethra are infected first, any part of the urinary system may get affected by infection. If left untreated, the infection can spread quickly to other parts of the urinary system, like kidney, and it can be a serious problem.

Urinary tract infection can happen to anyone, but women are considered more susceptible to it. In some cases, infants and children are also found to be affected by urinary tract infection, although such cases are usually very less. The common symptoms of urinary tract infection are – frequent and persistent urge to urinate, urinating in small amounts, a burning sensation while urinating, and traces of blood or foul smell with urine.

Along with these symptoms, you may also experience fever, back pain, and nausea, when the infection reaches your kidney. Since kidney infection can lead to complications, in such cases you should visit a doctor and ask for proper medical advice. Usually a course of antibiotics can cure the infection.

However, there are also multiple home remedies that you can try out to cure mild form of urinary tract infection. Drink a solution of baking soda (half teaspoon in a glass of water) when you have initial symptoms of urinary tract infection. This solution can help retain the acid-base balance of urine. Cranberry juice is also considered to be an excellent remedy for urinary tract infection. Studies show that a constituent of cranberry juice, named proanthocyanins, fights bacteria from clinging to the walls of the urinary tract, consequently helping to flush out bacteria with urine. To flush out the bacteria and other toxic materials from the body, it is also necessary that you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Increase intake of cloves and garlic in your diet as they are known to act as natural antibiotic. Eat a healthy diet of fresh vegetables and fruits and avoid caffeinated drinks, citrus juices, and alcohol until the infection is cleared away. Artificial sweeteners, spicy food, and any other food or drink that can irritate your bladder are also better avoided. To ease the pain and bladder pressure, you can apply a heating pad on your abdomen. This may provide some relaxation to the bladder. While applying the heating pad you can also apply castor oil on your abdomen to soothe the inflammation.
