The veins are important blood vessels that carry impure blood away from the organs to the heart for purification. There are valves in the veins which prevent the blood from flowing backwards into the organs, but sometimes these valves become weak with advancing age or due to other reasons and the blood does flow backwards leading to blood clots and congestion of the veins. This leads to a swelling of the veins, or varicose veins.
Normally varicose veins are noticed in the leg, but they can occur in any part of the body. The main causes for varicose veins are advancing age, hormonal imbalances during pregnancy, obesity, standing for long periods and a lack of exercise which affects the circulation of blood in the system. The main symptoms of varicose veins are swelling noticed along the course of the veins, purplish pigmentation of the skin around the area where the blood has clotted and severe muscular cramps due to the blood clotting and inadequate circulation of blood to the affected area.
There are several home remedies that can be used to treat varicose veins. For an immediate and effective soothing treatment for varicose veins, you can apply apple cider vinegar on the affected area twice a day, morning and evening till the swelling and discoloration subsides. Alternately you can apply witch hazel, rosemary oil or even Vitamin E oil and gently massage the affected areas to increase the blood circulation. A compress prepared with the marigold and applied to the affected area is beneficial for speedy treatment of the condition. You can also soak the area in cold water for a while or apply an ice-pack on the area to reduce the swelling of the veins and thus speed the treatment process. Mud packs applied to the affected area work on the same principle of cooling the area and thus reducing the swelling of the veins. Vitamin C and E are essential for treating this condition and thus you should increase your intake through your diet and also by way of Vitamin supplements. Daily consumption of raw vegetable juices such carrot juice and spinach juice combined in the proportion of 3:2 is beneficial for treating varicose veins. At the same time you should avoid all harmful food products such as spicy, fried and starchy foods, processed and conserved foods, pickles, white flour, refined sugar, caffeine and alcohol. Finally it is important to regulate blood circulation in the affected area by doing some basic and light exercises.
