Asthma is a Greek work which means panting or shortness of breath. It is a medical condition that afflicts the lungs and causes difficulty in breathing. It basically refers to an inflammation of the air passage which makes it difficult for the air to pass, thus causing wheezing, shortness of breath and a constriction in the chest.
Most asthma patients suffer from frequent cough and breathing problems, which could be triggered by air pollution, allergies to pollen and dust particles, respiratory infections, certain medications, presence of sulphite in food, fatigue or emotional stress. The best way to treat and prevent an asthma attack is to identify the cause and try to avoid that as far as possible. Since asthma attacks are usually triggered by the presence of pollutants or allergens in the air or due to stress, you should try and avoid these factors.
Apart from the preventive measures, there are several home remedies that can help to control and treat asthma. Turmeric and honey both work excellently to clear the airways and prevent all kinds of infections. You can grind some turmeric to a fine powder and have 1 tbsp of turmeric powder with 2 tbsp honey once a day to prevent asthma and strengthen your lungs and air passage. Drinking a glass of warm milk with 1 tsp turmeric powder and sugar to improve the taste before you go to bed will help you to sleep better and without any breathing trouble. If you suffer from attacks regularly at night, you can also massage your chest with a mixture of rock salt and clarified butter or mustard oil before you go to bed. Ginger is also effective in treating asthma, so you can have a glass of lemon juice with 1 tsp of fresh ginger juice once a day. You can grind basil leaves to a paste and mix 20 ml of this paste with 13 ml of honey and store it in a bottle. Whenever you feel an attack coming, you can have a spoonful of this to prevent the attack or at least reduce its intensity. Alternately you can wash some basil leaves, sprinkle some black salt on them and chew on them. A tea steeped in basil leaves and ginger is said to be beneficial in soothing the chest pain suffered by most asthma patients. Another good home remedy for asthma is eating a mixture of 1 tsp honey and 3 tbsp water which has been boiled with 6 pieces of clove and strained.
