Home Remedies For Asthma

What to eat for controlling asthma?
( 2 Mar 2009)

To begin with, asthma refers to a chronic illness which is exceedingly common, which targets your airways, resulting in breathing difficulties. The inflammation leads to reactions like coughing and a feeling of being short of breath. Airway irritability is one of the characteristics of this problem.

An attack can necessitate a dash to your nearest hospital’s emergency room. Thus, this is not a chronic condition to be trifled with. If you are below 40 years of age, chances are that you are more likely to have asthma. Genetics plays an important role as those whose families show a history of asthma are seen to be more likely to develop this condition. If you smoke, you must stop immediately or the consequences can be fatal. Besides inhalers and other sorts of medication, you can augment treatment by the following home remedies.

For adults, less than three cups of hot coffee have been shown to help when it comes to treating asthma attacks. It might be better to do so without the milk and sugar. As far as dietary habits go, figs have shown properties that make them good for asthma. Eat about three figs daily, after soaking them in a glass of water, the previous night. Chances are that honey can benefit asthma patients.  You can even mix in some other beneficial juices like garlic juice along with the honey. Asthma patients might also benefit from the intake of Vitamin C. Thus, look for red bell pepper, orange juice, strawberries and the like. Similarly lemon juice can be drunk with water either daily in the morning or before any meal. Besides helping fight infections, yogurt can also be of use in these cases. Add herbal remedies like sage to your teas to help fight these attacks. While eucalyptus oil shouldn’t be ingested, it can provide relief if inhaled. Just add a little to your kerchief and breathe. Do bear in mind that different asthma patients can have different triggers. Ask your doctor before trying out any new foods or extracts. For instance, some asthma patients find that their attacks are triggered by milk. It would help you immensely if you make a list of conditions and possible foods or drinks that you’ve taken before experiencing an asthma attack. Also note down how serious that particular attack was. This should help you determine settings and diets to avoid. Hunt your house for possible triggers and eliminate them. Try to gain some control over your work environment as well.

Asthma is a medical condition in which the passage of air through the windpipe and bronchial tubes becomes difficult. The most common symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing, difficulty in breathing and a constriction in the chest causing mild to severe pain. Asthma can be divided into extrinsic asthma, which develops due to allergies to dust, pollen or other allergens in the patient’s immediate or extended environment and intrinsic asthma which is linked to infections of the respiratory tract. Asthma is usually inherited but it can also be caused due to environmental pollution, presence of pollen, fungi and molds in the patient’s environment, extremely cold weather and personal lifestyle habits such as smoking and strenuous exercise in the form of sports or even frequent sex!

Asthma can be controlled and treated using simple home remedies. One of the first steps towards treating asthma includes finding out what triggers the attacks. Usually the attack is triggered by the presence of an allergen, extreme fatigue or emotional stress, so it is important to avoid undue stress and take adequate care to avoid allergens once they have been identified. You should also consider replacing the carpeting and bedding in your house to remove any allergens and fungi or mold that are residing in your immediate environment. As far as possible you should avoid air-conditioning which facilitates circulation of germs within your breathing space, unless you live and work in an extremely polluted area. Asthma patients are advised to avoid eating rice, fried stuff and sugar which can create a sensation of choking while swallowing and lead to an asthma attack. If you suffer from frequent attacks, you should consider going on a fruits, sprouts and fr4esh leafy vegetables diet which will help to cleanse your system and build your immune system. Regular consumption of lemon juice or lemon tea with some honey is beneficial in treating asthma. Honey helps in clearing the mucus in the lungs and also prevents other respiratory infections, thus helping to control asthma. If you suffer from asthma attacks at night, you should have a glass of warm milk with 1-2 tsp of turmeric and sugar to improve the taste. This will help to soothe the chest and clear the airways enabling easy breathing at night. Onion juice and garlic are also beneficial in reducing inflammation of the airways and clearing choked lungs and thus you should increase your intake of onions and garlic.
